The differences between XPS and EPS

Now floor heating insulation materials are common: Expanded polystyrene board (EPS) and Extruded polystyrene board (XPS).

Expanded polystyrene  board  (also known as foam board, EPS board) is made of expandable polystyrene beads containing volatile liquid foaming agent. After heating and pre developing, it is heated in the mold to form a white object. It has the structural characteristics of micro closed holes.

The extruded polystyrene board (XPS) is a kind of hard board which is continuously extruded and foamed by a special process with polystyrene resin as the raw material. Its interior is an independent closed bubble structure. It is an environmental friendly thermal insulation material with high compression resistance, no water absorption, moisture-proof, no air permeability, light weight, corrosion resistance, long service life and low thermal conductivity.

Excellent and durable thermal insulation

The thermal conductivity of XPS is 0.028w/mk, which has the characteristics of high thermal resistance and low linear expansion rate. Its thermal conductivity is far lower than other thermal insulation materials such as EPS , foamed polyurethane, thermal insulation mortar, cement perlite, etc. At the same time, due to the stable chemical and physical structure of the material, it can ensure the durability and stability of the insulation performance of the material.

Superior water resistance and moisture resistance

XPS has a close hole structure. Polystyrene molecular structure itself does not absorb water, and there is no gap between the front and the back of the board. Therefore, the water absorption rate is very low, and the moisture-proof and permeability resistance are very good.

High strength compression resistance

Because the foam structure of XPS is closely connected and there is no gap between the walls, the compressive strength of XPS is high, even if the blister lasts for a long time. Therefore, it can be used as parking platform, airport runway, highway and other fields to get good impact resistance.

Corrosion resistance and durability

General hard foam insulation materials are prone to aging after several years of use, which leads to water absorption and performance degradation. Because of its excellent anticorrosion, anti-aging and heat preservation, XPS can still maintain its excellent performance under high water vapor pressure, and its service life can reach 30-40 years.

Light weight and high hardness

XPS has a completely closed cell foaming structure, which is light, while the uniform honeycomb structure results in high hardness, but it is not as brittle as polyurethane foaming and phenolic foaming, so it is not easy to be damaged.
