India is experiencing a severe energy crisis because of coal shortage

As one of the countries with the fastest growing economy around the world and the fastest growing energy demand, India is trying to get natural gas.  


India's local media reported that India's power plants are turning to natural gas due to the severe coal shortage in India.


It is reported that in order to function normally, India’s power plants including the Indian State Power Group (NTPC) bought 10 million cubic meters of natural gas in addition everyday in the past few days which was enough to produce 2,000 megawatts of electricity.


India has been mainly depend on coal-fired power . According to the Indian Central Electric Power Bureau, coal-fired power generation in 2016 accounted for 62% of India's total electricity generation.


Actually, India has ability of using natural gas to generate electricity.


At present, India's natural gas power generation capacity is 25,185 megawatts, but because of the high price of imported natural gas, of which 55% are not put into use.


But now is different, the coal crisis make natural gas back to the field of vision, even the price is high,Indians are willing to pay.


GAIL and the United States signed a purchase agreement of 5.8 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) each year, and in June this year, the company is seeking to re-pricing.


In fact,Indian government is also planning to decrease the dependence on the coal.In May this year,India canceled the plan of building a 14-megawatt coal-fired power station, mainly due to the fact that the price of solar power has dropped significantly to an unprecedented low level.


Analyst Tim Buckley accepted the British "Independent" interview that India is transforming from coal to solar power, which will have a profound impact on the global energy market
